Is 100Mbps Good For Gaming?

Nowadays, everyone is playing their favourite games online with their friends or competing against them online. It’s a trend that’s on the rise with online multiplayer games like Warzone, Fortnite, and Destiny 2.

Even massively multiplayer online (MMO) roleplaying games like World of Warcraft and EVE Online are becoming more popular. What’s driving this trend? There are a few factors.

For one, it’s becoming more and more convenient to game online. You can buy games from the PlayStation Store or Xbox games store and download them straight to your gaming console. And with the emergence of the Metaverse and VR gaming, it’s only going to become more immersive.

However, all this talk of two worlds can only happen if we have improved internet connections, faster data, and lower data prices from our service providers.

In this article, I will answer some gaming questions related to the suitable internet speed for gaming.

What is a Good Internet Speed for Gaming_

What is a Good Internet Speed for Gaming?

A good internet speed for online gaming should be anything above 20 Mbps. This will allow you to have a consistent connection and will prevent any lag issues. Generally, most games don’t require more than 10-15 Mbps, but if you have a higher speed, it won’t hurt.

The important thing to avoid is high latency, which can cause issues with your connection. However, if you want to be able to play the latest games on the highest settings, you will need an internet speed of 100 Mbps or higher.

What is Latency and How Does it Affect Gaming?

Latency is the response time it takes for a computer to send a request to a server and the time it takes for a computer to get a reply.

One more gaming and video chatting specific consideration is that, unlike web browsing, it’s essential to ensure that you get a decent amount of upstream speed for these applications. A solid 10 to 15 megabits per second per device should be fine for high-quality video calls and streaming to Twitch in the high-quality definition.

That’s why some service providers may have very fast internet connections but still have slow response times when you click the mouse or find it hard to load assets.

100mbps is more of a broad sweep for general use on several devices; it’s not something you will see on a single device.

What are the Consequences of Having a Slow Internet Connection?

  • Slower response times due to increased latency and lag
  • Slower download time
  • Your Data is consumed much faster
  • Poor overall gaming experience
  • Poor in-game coordination and communication with friends and teammates

Data Caps

These are limits that some ISPs put on their data service, where if you exceed a certain amount per month, you would be looking at consequences like fraud or extra charges. Now data caps shouldn’t be much of a concern for web browsing, but you can quickly run up against them if you are gaming or a ton of 4K video.

For example, gaming runs up about 40 to 300MB per hour, watching 1080p videos consume about 1.5GB per hour and 4K videos consume an excess of 7GB per hour. With this information, you can calculate how much data you would be consuming on gaming and also know how high of a cap you might need every month.

The bottom line is that there is no point in overpaying for either speed or data with this information above available to you.

What Is The Best Connection To Have For Faster Mbps?

This varies based on several things like the ISP, the country, and the hardware being used. For instance, using an Ethernet cable would give you speeds of 40 to 50 megabits per second, varying on the tasks being handled. The best option thus would be to use wireless connections that would then give you speeds of up to 100 megabits per second.

Then on to the ISP providers, which vary based on country.

What Could Be Possible with Even Higher Network speeds?

The possibilities could be endless. We would be able to control machines from halfway around the world as if they were extensions of ourselves. A doctor in the UK could perform surgery on a patient all the way in China.

We could support over a million users simultaneously on one battle royal map; we could even game with astronauts from space; we would be dealing with 6G speeds we couldn’t even dream of.

Some Problems Network Providers Face

 Some Problems  Network Providers Face

However, there’s one problem with that future, and that’s down to our existing infrastructure. 4G waves can only travel over 10miles, and that’s why they’re always so patchy, so if you’re further than 10 miles away from a 4G cell tower, then you are out of luck.

5G made this even worse; the only way to make 5G so fast is by making them into millimetre waves. So that makes them faster but doesn’t allow them to be very reliable. I could be getting a stable 5G connection and step behind a tree, and it’s gone. So it’s still not reliable to use true 5G on its own.

For us to be able to get a 5G network, we need to go from one large central cell tower to a tower on every street to get true 5G waves. So we have to compensate for them with sub-six waves; it’s almost like a 4.5G network.

So now, imaging 6G waves which would have to become even smaller to make it faster, would make it almost impossible to get 6G off the ground. Thus we would need to improve all our infrastructure designs and that in itself is still far away.

Conclusion

To sum it up, 100mbps is great for gaming but still a bit out of reach for a single-use device. Most network providers are still not as fast as we want them to be, and the internet is not the same everywhere, so it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution for everyone. So it’s a bit unnecessary for one person and one device but very possible.

What will the internet be like in the future? Will we all have access to 100mbps? Only time will tell. I’ll like to read your thoughts in the comments below.
