LG Unveils Satellite-Powered Connected Car Solution at 2025 Conference

LG Electronics has unveiled a revolutionary satellite-based voice communication system for moving vehicles at the 2025 5GAA conference. The groundbreaking technology enables seamless two-way voice communication via satellite, marking a significant advancement in connected vehicle solutions and road safety enhancement.

The innovative system integrates AI-powered voice compression technology within LG’s IoT-NTN (Internet of Things-Non-Terrestrial Network) framework. This technological breakthrough overcomes traditional satellite communication limitations by reducing voice message sizes, enabling real-time voice conversations instead of mere emergency text messages.

During a compelling live demonstration at the conference, LG showcased the system’s capabilities by setting up dedicated NTN and TN (Terrestrial Network) zones. A vehicle equipped with demonstration equipment successfully transmitted voice messages between these zones whilst driving on actual roads, highlighting the seamless network switching capabilities.

LG’s prominence in the connected vehicle technology sector is evidenced by their market leadership, commanding a 24.4% share of the global telematics market according to Strategy Analytics. Their expertise spans across telematics, Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication, and in-vehicle infotainment systems.

Lee Sang-yong, head of the VS R&D laboratory at LG Vehicle Solution Company, emphasised the significance of this development: “Our IoT-NTN technology represents a leap forward for seamless, reliable connectivity for vehicles in the most remote or challenging environments. By enabling real-time voice communication via satellite, we’re not only enhancing driver safety but also laying the groundwork for the next generation of connected mobility solutions.”

The technology’s implementation is supported by a sophisticated cloud-based service platform that facilitates seamless connection between vehicle satellite communication and terrestrial networks. This integration enhances the overall user experience through advanced IoT-NTN technology, ensuring consistent connectivity regardless of location.

The 5G Automotive Association (5GAA), which hosted the conference, plays a crucial role in advancing connected mobility innovation. The organisation unites automotive manufacturers, parts suppliers, telecom operators, and network equipment producers to develop and commercialise 5G-based mobility solutions.

This satellite-based system represents a significant step forward in ensuring uninterrupted vehicle connectivity, particularly in areas with limited terrestrial network coverage. The technology’s ability to maintain communication in remote locations significantly enhances driver safety and emergency response capabilities.

As the automotive industry continues its evolution towards increased connectivity and automation, LG’s satellite-based communication system positions itself as a crucial component in the future of mobility. The technology’s potential impact extends beyond immediate safety benefits, contributing to the development of more intelligent and efficient transportation systems worldwide.
