Mircosoft Announces More Board Room Shake Up’s at Xbox As Activision’s Bobby Kotick Leaves Top Job

The corporate side of the Tech world can be a very cutthroat one, as Bobby can attest to. One moment, you’re at the top and feeling the power that comes with it, and the next, you’re out of a job and thinking about how it all went wrong.

Well, that’s the corporate world for you; it gives, and then it takes, and most of the time, you never know which end of the stick you’re on. Just make sure you don’t draw the short one because it gets brutal when you lose it. Now, as I alluded to in my intro, Bobby Kotick of Activision is no longer involved with Microsft, and that is down to the restructuring taking place at Xbox.

Bobby Kotick, the CEO of Activision Blizzard, will formally retire on December 29. Instead of appointing a direct successor, Activision Blizzard president Mike Ybarra, president of Activision publishing Rob Kostich, and vice chair of Activision Blizzard Thomas Tippl have been consolidated under Microsoft’s game content and studios president Matt Booty.

Kotick’s exit occurred barely two months after significant changes to the Xbox leadership team. Sarah Bond was elevated to the position of Xbox President, managing all Xbox platform and hardware initiatives, while Matt Booty was given the title of President of Game Content and Studios, which included managing the Bethesda and ZeniMax studios. Now that he is in charge of Activision Blizzard, Xbox Game Studios, and Bethesda, Booty is taking on even more duties.

How does Activison’s Executive Structure Look Now that Kotick is Gone?

Brian Bulatao, Julie Hodges, Armin Zerza, and Grant Dixton report to their counterparts at Microsoft Gaming. While Thomas Tippl (vice chairman, Activision Blizzard) is currently reporting to Matt Booty, he will leave Microsoft in March along with other Activision Blizzard executives as well. “Thomas, Brian, Julie, Grant, and Armin will continue to help us with the transition through March 2024,” adds Xbox CEO Phil Spencer, according to an internal memo acquired by the Verge.

How do these Changes Affect Other Studios?

Furthermore, Jill Braff has been designated the new head of ZeniMax and Bethesda, according to an email from Matt Booty announcing some of the changes that are happening there. Braff, who led the development teams at the studios, was a member of the integration team when ZeniMax and Bethesda joined Xbox back in 2021.

Opinion

This shake-up from Xbox and Microsft may seem a bit harsh, but this is more of a power move from Microsoft as it is a necessity. It won’t take long for the likes of Spencer and Booty to install their people, but they must be very careful as this is a very critical stage in the company’s development. So, it will take some impressive work from both men to navigate what could be the most pivotal time in Xbox’s history; there is no room for error.

Conclusion

Microsoft continues to incorporate Activision Blizzard into its expanding Microsoft Gaming division. Matt Booty, who is clearly taking on additional responsibilities, is involved in this process. Xbox users are now awaiting word from Microsoft regarding the inclusion of Activision Blizzard titles in Xbox Game Pass.

Spencer previously mentioned that news about new Activision Blizzard games being added to Game Pass would only be available in 2024. He attributed the delay to the lengthy regulatory procedure and the absence of a back catalogue in the deal. Prior to the completion of the Microsoft contract, Activision Blizzard also disclosed on X (previously Twitter) that Diablo IV and Modern Warfare III would not be available on Xbox Game Pass this year.
