Lyft Acquires Free Now for $200M to Expand Into Europe

In a significant expansion move, Lyft announced on April 16, 2025, its agreement to acquire Free Now, a leading European multi-mobility platform, for $199 million. The acquisition marks Lyft’s first venture into the European market, substantially expanding its operations beyond North America with an expected closing in the second half of 2025.

Free Now, headquartered in Germany, operates across nine European countries and more than 150 cities, including major markets such as Ireland, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom. The platform offers diverse transportation options, from traditional taxis to modern solutions like eScooters, and eBikes, supported by strong local partnerships and regulatory relationships.

Lyft CEO David Risher emphasised the strategic importance of this acquisition, stating, “We’re on an ambitious path to build the best, most customer-obsessed mobility platform in the world, and entering Europe is an important step in our growth journey.” The company views Free Now’s local-first approach as aligned with Lyft’s core values of service and connection.

The deal represents Lyft’s most substantial international expansion to date, potentially doubling its addressable market to over 300 billion personal vehicle trips annually. Financial projections indicate an increase in Lyft’s annualised gross bookings by approximately 1 billion euros ($1.1 billion).

The ownership transition comes as current stakeholders BMW and Mercedes-Benz Mobility refocus on their core business strategies, including electrification and artificial intelligence initiatives. Following the acquisition, Free Now will maintain its brand identity while gradually integrating new benefits for both drivers and riders.

Free Now’s platform features comprehensive services including advance ride booking, multiple payment options, and accessibility features. The app serves major European airports including London Heathrow, Dublin, Frankfurt, and Madrid, with enhanced safety protocols and sanitisation measures.

Industry analysts view this acquisition as Lyft’s strategic response to compete with Uber’s established global presence. By acquiring Free Now, Lyft gains immediate access to a mature European market infrastructure rather than building from scratch, potentially accelerating its market penetration and regulatory compliance.

This strategic move positions Lyft for significant growth in the global mobility market, aligning with industry trends toward consolidated, multi-modal transportation platforms that integrate various mobility solutions under a single service umbrella.
