Google Fi Wireless commemorated its tenth anniversary on April 22, 2025, introducing a new budget-conscious Unlimited Essentials plan and significant service enhancements. The wireless carrier unveiled expanded high-speed data allocations, improved iOS integration, and broader international 5G coverage, marking a substantial evolution in its service offerings.
The centrepiece of Google Fi’s anniversary announcement is the new Unlimited Essentials plan, priced at $35 per month for a single line. This plan delivers unlimited talk, text, and 30GB of high-speed data, establishing itself as the carrier’s most economical unlimited option. Existing subscribers will benefit from enhanced data allowances across all plan tiers.
Current plan upgrades include the Unlimited Standard plan, formerly known as Simply Unlimited, which now offers 50GB of high-speed data, increased from 35GB, along with 25GB of hotspot tethering capability. The premium tier doubles its high-speed data allocation to 100GB and provides 50GB of hotspot data while maintaining international roaming benefits and Google One storage.
iPhone users received particular attention in this update, with Google Fi introducing native voicemail access through the iPhone’s built-in Phone app, eliminating the requirement for a separate Fi application. The service expanded its device support by implementing data-only eSIM compatibility for both iPads and Android tablets, streamlining the connection process through QR code activation.
The carrier’s international presence has grown significantly, with 5G coverage now extending to more than 92 countries for Unlimited Premium and Flexible plan subscribers. This expansion represents an addition of 54 countries to the network, with iPhone users gaining access to international 5G capabilities previously exclusive to Android devices.
Cross-platform messaging has seen notable improvements, with enhanced RCS messaging support between iOS and Android devices enabling high-quality media sharing and read receipts. This development follows Apple’s adoption of the RCS protocol, with full integration continuing to progress through iOS 18.4 beta testing initiated in March 2025.
Google Fi maintains its unique position as the sole major U.S. carrier providing complimentary data-only SIMs for tablets and laptops without mandatory hotspot tethering. The introduction of eSIM technology further simplifies the connection process for contemporary devices, particularly benefiting iPad users seeking cellular connectivity.
Since its 2015 launch as Project Fi, the service has evolved from supporting select Android devices to becoming a comprehensive cross-platform solution. These anniversary updates address crucial user feedback, particularly regarding iOS feature parity and multi-device data management, positioning Google Fi as an attractive option for households using both iOS and Android devices.
