Epic Systems Achieves Record EHR Market Share, Surpassing Oracle Health

Epic Systems has achieved its largest-ever annual increase in hospital electronic health records (EHR) market share in 2024, strengthening its position against competitor Oracle Health. According to a 1 May 2025 industry report, the Wisconsin-based company now controls nearly 40% of the U.S. acute care EHR market.

Recent data from KLAS Research reveals Epic’s commanding position with 51.5% of U.S. acute multispecialty hospital beds, while Oracle Health, formerly known as Cerner, holds 23.8%. This significant growth has been fuelled by major healthcare organisations transitioning to Epic’s platform, including New York’s Northwell Health, Pittsburgh’s UPMC, and Utah’s Intermountain Health.

Epic’s expansion in 2024 builds upon its impressive performance in 2023, during which the company added 15 academic medical centres and 15 children’s hospitals to its portfolio. The company’s annual revenue reached £4.9 billion in 2023, with analysts projecting further growth for 2024.

Despite its historic prominence in government healthcare systems, Oracle Health faces mounting challenges. Following its £28.3 billion acquisition by Oracle in 2022, the company continues to implement its system across 147 VA acute care facilities. However, the loss of nine health system clients to Epic has impacted its market position, despite investments in AI-powered voice and facial recognition interfaces.

Epic’s success can be attributed to its robust interoperability infrastructure. The company’s Care Everywhere network processes 220 million patient record exchanges monthly, with half involving non-Epic systems. Their Community Connect programme enables smaller healthcare providers to access Epic’s comprehensive ecosystem, which now supports records for more than 305 million patients globally.

The healthcare sector’s increasing focus on vendor consolidation and interoperability has benefited Epic significantly. All 18 U.S. News Honor Roll health systems now either use or are transitioning to Epic’s platform, creating a ripple effect that influences smaller community hospitals to align with dominant EHR networks.

Looking ahead, industry analysts predict continued growth in ambulatory settings, where Epic currently holds a 43.92% market share. While Oracle’s AI innovations show promise, Epic’s established provider network and expanding bedside AI capabilities suggest sustained market leadership in the coming years.
